The retrofit imperative

Telecom operators face a hard constraint: the plant is live, but 5G site growth keeps adding rectifier load. Transformer lead times have reached 160 weeks globally, so a rip-and-replace switchgear order is not a credible schedule for most network buildouts. The same pressure shows up in supplier calendars: Guangdong computing-hardware factories are booked into next year.

DC Power sourcing work therefore centers on -48V DC retrofit kits: type-tested busway sections, hot-swap battery strings, and import-ready 48V Li-ion BBU shelves with UL 1973 + UL 9540A data packs. The goal is a phased cutover that never drops the DC bus.

Procurement teams also have to factor tariff exposure. US tariffs on Chinese dry-type transformers hit 46.6%, with some lines +125%, so locking in tested replacements before a site expansion is usually cheaper than replacing the electrical room later.

Cutover checklist

  • Pre-stage a temporary 48V Li-ion BBU string and confirm state-of-charge limits for hot connection.
  • Parallel the BBU shelf with the live -48V bus before releasing any breaker.
  • Swing DC distribution to IEC 61439-6 type-tested busway sections one feeder at a time.
  • Lock billing-grade PDU metering at ±1% and file UL 1973 + UL 9540A documentation before final acceptance.

Lead-acid to Li-ion

Legacy VRLA strings are the weak point in a 5G retrofit: they rely on long recharge tails and take up floor space the operator would rather use for BBU shelves. A 48V Li-ion BBU shelf comes through Shenzhen with a BBU MOQ of 50+ and UN38.3 Class 9 sea-freight packaging.

For rack-level visibility, billing-grade PDU metering at ±1% is specified on the new 48V power path. IEC C13 outlets carry 10 A, C19 outlets carry 16 A, and C21 hot-condition connectors carry 16 A, so branch loading has to be checked before adding 5G baseband loads.
